Pressure continues to mount on Optus today for an overhaul its data protection measures after a cyberattack leaked thousands of customers’ private information.

Federal Minister for Government Services Bill Shorten told Today this morning the government expected the telco to improve its data protection.

“We want Optus to look after its customers … They have done not enough to protect its customers and their follow-up needs to be much more diligent.”

We are doing everything possible to try lend a hand … but there’s no doubt that the defences of the company were, as I’ve been informed, inadequate.

“They’ve got to reach out and support their customers.”

Cybersecurity expert Brett Callow said the Optus breach and other cyberattacks showed that criminals were “weaponising” companies’ customers details.

He said initial reports showed it was not a sophisticated cyberattack that could have been carried out by a high school student.
