Former French President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing died Wednesday night at the age of 94, Europe 1 and AFP reported.
Giscard d’Estaing, often referred to simply as VGE, had been in hospital in Tours since November 16.
A leading figure of the French center-right, VGE led France from 1974, when he defeated François Mitterrand, until 1981, when Mitterrand won back the presidency.
VGE was a firm believer in Europe and was elected as a member of the European Parliament, serving from 1989 to 1993.
