Former Italian Prime Minister Conte to go back to teaching

Giuseppe Conte is going back to school — at least as a researcher.

The former Italian prime minister has announced his return to the University of Florence to work as a professor of law again.

“My leave of absence is over, so I will return to Florence,” Conte told il Fatto Quotidiano on Monday.

It is not yet clear, however, whether Conte will be able to teach as early as this semester, or will simply conduct research, as plans are already in place for the current semester of the academic year. University of Florence Rector Luigi Dei said the decision would be made by March 1. Meanwhile, a decree was signed formally resuming Conte’s service at the university’s faculty of law as a professor of private law.

This ends speculation that Conte could return as a minister in the government under new Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

“There are many ways to participate in political life. We’ll see that alongside the friends I worked with” he said. Earlier, Conte had written on Facebook that his political commitment would continue even if he was an ordinary citizen.
