Fourteen dead in plane crash in the Brazilian state of Amazonas

SAO PAULO, Sept 16 (Reuters) – Fourteen people aboard a small plane were killed when the plane crashed on Saturday in the northern Brazilian state of Amazonas, the state’s governor said.

The accident took place in the province of Barcelos, about 400 kilometers (248 miles) from the state capital, Manaus.

“I deeply regret the death of the 12 passengers and two crew members who were victims of the plane crash that occurred on Saturday in Barcelos,” Wilson Lima, governor of the state of Amazonas, said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Our teams have been working from the beginning to provide the necessary support. My sympathies and prayers are with his family and friends.”

The Manaus Aerotaxi airline issued a statement confirming that an accident had occurred and that it was investigating but did not offer details about deaths or injuries.

“We respect the privacy of those involved at this difficult time and will be available to provide all necessary information and updates as the investigation progresses,” the statement said.

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) reported in a statement that investigators from the Accident Research and Prevention Center (CENIPA) were called to begin an investigation into the causes of the accident of the small aircraft, an Embraer Bandeirante with registration PT-. SOG.

In an interview with the newspaper O Globo, Governor Lima said that the bodies had already been removed from the plane and that the victims were Brazilian tourists.

Lima further added that the region is facing heavy rains and the most likely cause of the accident was an error in the route taken at the time of landing.
