France extends ban on UK travel ‘until further notice’

French Prime Minister Jean Castex announced Thursday that France would extend its U.K. travel ban “until further notice” due to the coronavirus.

France shut its border with the U.K. on December 20, shortly after a new variant of the coronavirus was discovered to be widespread in southern England, and said that the travel ban would remain in place until January 6.

The decision to extend the restrictions will see most travelers unable to enter France for an indefinite period.

EU citizens, EU permanent residents and other exempt categories such as truck drivers or train operators are still allowed to cross the border. “They will have to show a negative test done on U.K. territory to enter our territory,” Castex said.

The U.K., which is facing a massive fresh wave of infections because of the new variant, began its third national lockdown on Tuesday.
