French Toast, don’t throw out that stale bread, let’s get cooking breakfast.

There is loaf in the bread bin that hasn’t been eaten all week and unfortunately the bread has turned stale. If you’re thinking of throwing the rest of it away, please don’t! Let’s make some french toast instead.

It turns out that slightly stale bread is actually the best for making French toast because stale bread absorbs more of the egg mixture than fresh bread.

The origins of French toast are not entirely clear, but long before this sweet or savoury snack was called “French toast” similar recipes were being whipped up all around the world.

One of the earliest versions has been traced back to the Roman Empire.

In France, the dish is called “pain perdu” meaning “lost bread”. Instead of losing the bread, rescue it and turn it into a luxurious breakfast.
