Gas back above $6 in Pacific County

LONG BEACH — The average price of gasoline in Pacific County has again surged above $6 a gallon for regular as global oil supplies struggle with transportation bottlenecks in the Middle East.

At $6.03 a gallon, the county currently has the second-highest average price in the state, behind only San Juan County ($6.34). Spot checks around the county find gas selling for well above the average at many locations.

The statewide average on Sept. 23 was $5.55, up from $4.60 a year earlier, an increase of more than 20%.

Diesel averages $7.47 statewide, up more than 47% from the year-ago average of $5.07. This has been punishing for rural workers in fields including logging, fishing and aquaculture.

Gasoline initially rose above $6 in the county on April 30 as the impacts of the Trump administration’s war with Iran began to reverberate through the economy. The price dipped well below $6 for the summer before beginning a steady climb about a month ago.

In its nationwide briefing on Sept. 17, AAA reported: “The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is up 16 cents from last week at $4.43 and more than one dollar higher than it was a year ago. Crude oil remains high, averaging $100 per barrel amid continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz. Gas prices are back to what they were earlier this year during the spring, and the national average is inching closer to this year’s record high of $4.56 set on May 21. The all-time high for the national average is $5.01 set on June 14, 2022.”
