GB News halted its broadcast for a breaking news announcement as Yvette Cooper addressed Parliament on the findings from a five-month review of the grooming gang scandal. The Home Secretary confirmed that Labour will accept all 12 of the recommendations made in Baroness Louise Casey’s rape gangs review.
Ahead of the release of the report’s findings, Cooper said “We have lost more than a decade. That must end now.” The Home Secretary announced that more than 800 cases have so far been identified for review. She told MPs that she “expects that figure to rise above a thousand.” The politician then added that the audit had identified victims as young as ten, often those in care for children with learning or physical disabilities being targeted for grooming “precisely because of their vulnerability.” She said that “children as young as ten plied with drugs and alcohol, brutally raped by gangs of men” had been “disgracefully let down again and again by the authorities who were meant to protect them and keep them safe.”
In her parliamentary address today, Ms Cooper said that the current laws are too weak as she vowed to change them. Explaining that perpetrators will be denied refugee status and removed, she said: “Those who groom children or who commit sexual offences will not be granted asylum in the UK. We will do everything in our power to remove them.”
