Georgia wide receiver Rara Thomas arrested

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia wide receiver Rara Thomas was arrested early Friday morning on one felony charge of cruelty to a child and two misdemeanor charges of battery, according to the Athens-Clarke County jail website.

Further details were not immediately available; the Athens-Clarke County Police turned down a request for an incident report or arrest warrant, citing confidentiality of records of child abuse. Thomas is suspended indefinitely, a school source confirmed.

This is Thomas’ second arrest since joining the Bulldogs after the 2022 season; he was arrested after an alleged domestic violence incident in a dorm room in January 2023, shortly after transferring from Mississippi State.

The charges — family violence and false imprisonment — were dismissed as part of a plea deal, with Thomas completing anger management classes and community service. Thomas did not participate in much of Georgia’s spring practice, which coach Kirby Smart indicated was part of the disciplinary process.

Thomas played in Georgia’s first 11 games. A foot injury kept him out of the final three games.

“This is a pending legal matter. We will have no further comment at this point,” said Steven Drummond, Georgia’s associate athletic director for strategic communications.
