Giant companies generated half of EU’s web turnover

In 2022, the EU had 32 million enterprises, using 160 million folks with a web turnover of €38 trillion.

The overwhelming majority, 99% (31.7 million enterprises), have been micro and small enterprises using every as much as 49 folks. Collectively, micro and small enterprises employed nearly half of all individuals employed in enterprises (49%; 78.8 million folks). They generated €12.2 trillion in web turnover, representing 32% of the whole web turnover. 

Medium-size enterprises (50-249 individuals employed) represented a small share of the whole variety of enterprises (0.8%; 247 000 enterprises) and employed 15% of the folks (24.6 million folks). These enterprises registered roughly one-fifth of the online turnover (€6.8 trillion; 18%). 

Although massive enterprises (greater than 249 individuals employed) represented solely 0.2% of the whole variety of enterprises (53 000 enterprises), they employed greater than a 3rd of the labour pressure (56.5 million folks, 35%) and generated half (50%) of the online turnover (€19.2 trillion).

Trade: greatest turnover in 2022

Trade had the largest turnover, producing one-third of the turnover in 2022 (€13.5 trillion, 35% of whole web turnover). With solely 8% of the whole variety of enterprises (2.4 million), it employed round one-fifth of the enterprise labour pressure (33.1 million folks, 21% of the whole variety of individuals employed). 

Commerce represented 18% of all enterprises (5.8 million). It employed 19% of the folks (29.8 million) and generated 29% (€11.2 trillion) of the whole turnover. 

Development represented 12% (3.8 million) of the whole variety of enterprises however solely 6% (€2.1 trillion) of the whole turnover. This sector had 13.7 million folks employed (9%). 

Different companies, together with corporations working in a wide range of companies – from transportation and storage to lodging and meals service actions, training, human well being and social work actions and humanities, leisure and recreation – have been the best in numbers. They accounted for 62% of the whole variety of enterprises (19.9 million enterprises), greater than half of the whole employment (83.3 million, 52%) and nearly one-third of the online turnover (€11.4 trillion, 30%).
