Google reveals what Aussies are searching on 20th anniversary

It’s hard to imagine life without Google but it was only 20 years ago when the search engine launched in Australia.

Google Australia started with one employee working from their loungeroom in 2002, when the most popular search engine was Yahoo!.

It now has more than 2000 local employees and provides nearly $67 billion in annual economic value to Australia.

To commemorate the milestone, Google Australia has shared some of the most popular searches Aussies have made over the past 20 years.

Google said do it yourself (DIY) searches were popular in Australia with many people searching for DIY blinds, face masks, wedding invites and Christmas decorations.

The top how to search was “how to draw”.

COVID-19 topped the list for words searched alongside “news”, followed by Trump.

Sport was a top searched term with AFL, NRL and F1 news making the list.

Aussies spent a lot of time googling self care, with “what is self care” being a top searched term.

In the past five years Aussies really became creative in the kitchen, with some technical cooking terms proving to be commonly searched.
