The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rules are likely to be notified soon. News18 reported citing government sources.
The Citizenship Amendment Act of 2019 seeks to expedite citizenship for persecuted non-Muslim undocumented immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
The legislation has been ineffective since its passage in Parliament four years ago as the government had so far sought eight extensions to frame the CAA rules.
According to the News18 report, the government is likely to notify the CAA rules soon. After the notification of the rules, the national census will be conducted and then the delimitation process will begin with the government forming a delimitation commission.
It should be noted that the next delimitation exercise is scheduled to take place before 2027.
Earlier last month, the Union Home Ministry had last month sought another extension to frame the CAA rules.
The ministry had written to parliamentary committee on subordinate legislation in Lok Sabha, seeking time till the end of September to formulate the CAA rules.
This was the eighth extension requested by the government.
The last such request was made by the MHA in January to extend the deadline till June 30.
