Greta Thunberg announces end-of-school strikes. Kind of.

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg said Friday that she will no longer be able to miss classes as a way to draw attention to climate change because she is graduating from high school.

Thunberg, 20, began organizing Friday protests in front of the Swedish parliament building during school hours in 2018. Teenagers around the world followed her lead, leading to an international student movement called Fridays for Future.

Because she will no longer be a student, Thunberg noted that her future Friday activities will “technically” not be going to school. But in a tweet, she vowed to continue protesting, saying: “The fight has just begun.”

“We are still moving in the wrong direction where those in power are allowed to sacrifice themselves,” Thunberg wrote on Twitter. “We are rapidly approaching potential non-linear ecological and climate tipping points beyond our control.”

As a teenager, Thunberg was invited to speak with political and business leaders at UN conferences and the annual World Economic Forum in Davos. She was also named Time magazine’s Youngest Person of the Year in 2019 and received multiple nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.

For her latest school strike outside parliament, Thunberg posed with a sign in Swedish while wearing the cap that high school graduates usually wear in Sweden.

American singer-songwriter and poet Patti Smith, who was in Stockholm for a concert on Friday as part of a world tour, turned up at the rally, telling Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter that tears came to her eyes when she met Thunberg.

“This is Greta Thunberg, faithfully taking up her Friday School Strike for Climate Action. She is graduating today and we extend our gratitude and congratulations to her,” Smith wrote on Instagram.

Thunberg has urged the media to focus on other young activists. Fridays for Future participants planned to protest outside the UN climate talks in Bonn, Germany, on Friday to urge governments to do more to curb global warming.
