“(The Regional Marketing Office) will also serve as a hub for HAL’s engagement with the broader South East Asia region and act as a window to other Indian defense PSUs,” a Defense Ministry statement said.
Another reason for the opening of the office was the potential to service and maintain the Su-30 fleet of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), according to press reports.
Hal is one of the largest producers of Su-30 and was also looking to supply spare parts to the RMAF, the availability of which has been affected due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
This is not the first time that HAL has established its marketing office in Malaysia. In August 2022, while pursuing a deal for the Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA), which it ultimately lost to the South Koreans, the Indian aerospace and defense company established an overseas marketing office in Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile, Singh also met his Malaysian counterpart, Dato’ Seri Mohamad Hasan. During the talks, both sides discussed initiatives to further expand bilateral defense ties, with a particular focus on identifying ways to strengthen industrial cooperation.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fully implement the Enhanced Strategic Partnership, according to a Defense Ministry statement.
Singh also highlighted the potential of the Indian defense industry with capacity and ability to cooperate with the Malaysian Armed Forces in their maintenance and inventory modernization plans.
Sources in the defense establishment told ThePrint that the Malaysian office will also serve other markets in Southeast Asia. They said HAL is in talks with some countries that have shown interest in the Tejas, as well as helicopters, including the light combat helicopter.
HAL is also in talks with the Philippines for the sale of six indigenous advanced light helicopters. Philippines, in January of last year, He signed a contract with India over the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.
