Pakistan’s first Sikh journalist and anchor Harmeet Singh, who was recently fired from his job by public television, alleged that he faces extreme challenges to survive in the country.
He was fired after a complaint from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and former minister Shazia Atta Marri, who blamed Harmeet for spreading fake news about the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) raid against her and the recovery of PKR 97 billion of his possession.
According to Harmeet Singh, who made his mark as Pakistan’s first Sikh journalist, he acknowledged that last week he shared a news on his recovered 97 billion rupees from his.
He said he had shared the news after it was circulated by several local news channels and by several independent journalists from Sindh on their social media accounts.
Harmeet Singh, who also runs a YouTube channel, said that after learning that the news was fake, he deleted the tweet and sent a written apology to Shazia Marri acknowledging his mistake.
He further said that instead of accepting his apology, Shazia sent him a legal notice regarding a Rs 10,000 crore defamation case and used her political power to fire him from his job while threatening him that if he was not removed, she would stop. All government advertising and channel license will be cancelled.
Although Harmeet, along with senior journalists, met Acting Federal Information Minister Murtaza Solangi on September 9 and was assured of all possible help, Harmeet Singh reports that PPP leaders had categorically told him that the doors of all media are closed. for him and his journalistic career is over.
Harmeet posted her video on YouTube and said: “It’s getting really hard for me to survive. I received many job offers from foreign channels, but I wanted to work for my country. But I didn’t know that this country is an elite club.”
He added: “Everyone is aware of the situation in this country. A large number of Sikhs are migrating from here. I had a desire to serve this country and make people aware of the beauty of this country. But I misjudged and, apart from ordinary people, I received no support.”
