display legend Harrison Fordwho has a reputation for being cautious during interviews, briefly let his guard down during a BBC Radio 1 conversation about “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”.
Ford, who will turn 81 next month, has said it is his last film as the character he has been depicted since first donning the iconic fedora in 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
Towards the end of the interview, Ford was asked by BBC Radio 1’s Ali Plumb about Indy’s enduring legacy and why the character and films resonate so much with fans.
“I think what I admire most about them is the depth and the subtlety of emotion and the importance of emotion in these movies,” he said, adding:
“Since the latter deals with age, frailty, and the changing nature of life, it was especially compelling to me because I’m that age and I wanted the audience to feel real. I wanted them to see the complexity of that experience with someone they’ve spent 40 years with.”
Plumb responded with a message no doubt shared by many fans.
“I can say on behalf of all the fans, thank you. It’s been quite an adventure,” Plumb said. “We love you so much. I don’t want you to blush or anything, but you mean a lot to us and thank you.”
Ford, who turns 81 next month, seemed speechless at first.
“And I must sincerely thank you,” he said. “It means the world to me.”
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” opens June 30.
Ford has been busier than ever of late, with roles on both the big and small screen. He is assuming the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe starting with next year’s “Captain America: Brave New World.”
He also stars with Helen Mirren in “1923,” the “Yellowstone” prequel airing on Paramount+, and many hope it gets an Emmy nomination for his role on AppleTV’s “Shrinking.”
Both shows have been renewed for a second season.
