Health Department Recommends Spa Clients Get Blood Tested

The New Mexico Department of Health has begun contacting former clients of Albuquerque’s VIP Beauty Salon and Spa. This comes after a new report of a diagnosed HIV case was linked to the VIP Spa. The only self-reported risk exposure for HIV was a vampire facial at the Albuquerque spa in 2018. The salon was previously located in the 800 block of Tijeras Avenue NW. NMDOH recommends that anyone who has received an injection service have a blood test. The department said clients can go to the South Valley Public Health office for free counseling and testing for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. NMDOH said its investigation has found additional HIV infections linked to services provided at the spa. The spa was closed in September 2018 after NMDOH, Department of Regulation and Licensing found practices that could spread blood-borne infections. The owner of the VIP Spa pleaded guilty to five felony counts of practicing medicine without a license in 2022. More than 100 spa patrons were tested in 2018 and 2019 for blood-borne infections. The South Valley Health Office will have three days where free blood tests will be available to former spa clients. The first will be from 3 pm to 6:30 pm on Friday, July 8. The office is located at El Centro Familiar 2001 SW. The other two dates will be the morning of Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The last time former VIP Spa clients will be able to get free walk-in trials will be Tuesday, July 18. The office will have free tests from 3 pm to 6:30 pm
