Heartbreaking tributes to couple killed in crash between camper van and lorry

The devastated families of a couple who tragically died following a crash between a camper van and a lorry have paid heartfelt tributes to them. Karen Cozens, 60, and David Cozens, 52, from Minehead, died when their Mazda van was involved in a collision with a Volvo lorry on the A358 in Combe Florey, near Taunton, Somerset, at 6.40am on September 30. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the couple tragically died at the scene. They have since been remembered as a much-loved pair who were “loved by everyone”.

In a heartfelt tribute, Karen’s family expressed their heartbreak, adding that the 60-year-old had “a heart of gold”. They said: “They were both loved by their family and by everyone around them. They loved going on camping trips, watching banger racing ad walking their dogs. We will miss them so much and we only wish they had more time to watch their grandchildren grown up. Mum was an incredible woman who had a heart of gold and was a friend to many. She was the light in our family and the pain of losing her cannot be described.

“We want to thank all the emergency services, air ambulance and especially the three members of the public who tried to help our mum and step-dad in the moments after the collision. It won’t be forgotten.”

In a separate tribute, David’s son Matthew, described his dad as “the jolliest of blokes” who “always had a smile to brighten everyone’s day”.

He said: “Dad always put his family first and was always there for us when we needed him. He was the patriarch of our family and always so proud of his children and grandchildren.

“He was the jolliest of blokes and always loved to have a laugh with everyone. He was the man who always had a smile to brighten everyone’s day and the memories I shared with him will live on in my heart always.

“The days are becoming shorter but the pain of missing you is only getting harder. I know you’re at peace and reunited with your mum and dad.

“It’s not goodbye it’s until we meet again, I’ll always love and miss you dearly. Dad, your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.”

Both families continue to be supported by the police. Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to the police and those with information surrounding the incident are urged to contact Avon and Somerset Police on 5226279615 or complete their online appeals form.
