LEXINGTON, Ky. — The horse racing supervisory authority will hold an emergency summit Tuesday with Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Racing Commission and HISA veterinary teams to review data and analysis in the wake of 12 horse deaths in the last month at the site of the Kentucky Derby. .
The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) announced Monday that it will also send track superintendent Dennis Moore for a second independent analysis of the training and surfaces. HISA’s director of equine welfare and safety, Jennifer Durenberger, will provide additional veterinary expertise and supervision of the horses at Churchill Downs.
The review will begin on Wednesday, a HISA statement said on Monday. Executive Director Lisa Lazarus and Track Safety Director Ann McGovern will visit the track to receive test results and suggest follow-up.
Seven horses died of training or racing injuries at Churchill Downs ahead of the 149 Kentucky Derby on May 6, including two on the undercard. The gelding Lost in Limbo and his mare Kimberley Dream, both 7 years old, were euthanized after suffering similar leg injuries over the track weekend.
