In An incident involving a celebration of a gang member’s release due to Covid-induced probation, a bullet-riddled body in a Mehrauli jungle and bloodstains on a flagstone: Delhi police were dealing with an open case and closed. However, a drone mapping of the forest led police to discover another body with gunshot wounds, turning it into a double murder case.
Police received a call on July 15, 2020, stating that a man with gunshot wounds was lying near the Freedom Fighter Colony. The then DCP (South), Atul Kumar Thakur, said teams rushed to the scene and found that the man, identified as Abdul Ali, had been taken to AIIMS and pronounced dead on arrival.
During the inspection of the area, the police found the deceased’s phone, which was soaked in blood, and bloodstains on the slab of a nullah near whom the body was found. Police also found empty liquor and cigarette bottles. A senior officer handling the case at the time said: “It was a blind case and CCTV footage was analysed. It was found that a total of six people, including the deceased, had come and held a party there, after which a fight broke out and Ali was shot.”
The police identified several people and arrested two men, identified as Vipin Balyan and Satender. “However, since bloodstains were seen leading into the forest, a drone was used to scan and analyze the area and another body with gunshot wounds was discovered. The defendant later revealed that he had shot two people, Ali and Sanjay,” an officer said.
“Prima facie, it came to light that a fight broke out between the deceased and the other gang members, as the duo had allegedly testified in court as witnesses in a case against the gang leader. The other members held a grudge against them and planned to kill them under the pretext of a celebration,” the official said.
