How is Google’s new AI search different from Bard’s chatbot?

Alphabet Inc’s Google on Wednesday demonstrated an updated core search product that incorporates more AI into its responses, as the company seeks to allay doubts that it is losing ground to Microsoft Corp’s OpenAI-powered Bing search.

Google already has a Bard chatbot that competes with ChatGPT, the OpenAI chatbot that has generated great buzz among users with its human responses.

So when do you google and when do you bard?

The company says that traditional Google search should still be used to find and search for information, such as locating something to buy.

Bard is a chatbot with a personality that can carry on human-like conversations and is intended to be used for creative collaboration, for example, to generate software code or write a caption for a photo.

What are the updates to Google Search?

With improved search called the generative search experience, the Google home page still looks and acts like your familiar search bar.

The difference is in the responses: if the new Google detects that generative AI can be used to answer a query, the top of the results page will display the AI-generated response. Then the traditional links to the Web will be maintained.

For example, a search for “weather in San Francisco” will, as usual, direct the user to an eight-day forecast, while a query about what to wear in the California city yields a long AI-generated answer, according to a demo for Reuters. earlier this week.

“You should bring layers, including a short-sleeved shirt and a sweater or light jacket for the day,” the result stated, which includes links to websites where he obtained such advice.

Users will also be able to enter a new “conversational mode”, which similar to Bard and ChatGPT remembers the user’s previous questions so users can more easily follow up.

However, the company notes that the conversational mode is not designed to be a chatbot with a personality; it is intended solely to help refine search results. For example, your responses will never contain the phrase “I”, unlike Bard and ChatGPT.

Can I try the new Google Search now?

Not yet. US consumers will gain access to the Search Generative Experience in the coming weeks through a waiting list, a testing phase during which Google will monitor the quality, speed and cost of search results, the company said.

Can I try Bard now?

The company said Wednesday that Bard is now available without a waiting list in 180 countries and territories, and plans to expand its support to 40 languages.
