How Labour lied to Britain’s farmers

Presenter Kirstie Allsopp accused Ms Reeves of “destroying their [farmers’] ability to pass farms onto their children”.

She added: “It is an appalling decision which shows the Government has zero understanding of what matters to rural voters.”

Former Scottish Conservative leader, Ruth Davidson, predicted the move could be reversed, comparing it to George Osbourne’s infamous “pasty tax” U-turn.

Speaking on SkyNews’ Electoral Dysfunction podcast, Ms Davidson said: “A million sounds like a lot. But if you’ve got a couple of farm buildings, sheds, machinery sheds, some land, like almost all family farms, even small family farms, are above that threshold.”

Tom Bradshaw, of the National Farmers’ Union, said: “This Budget not only threatens family farms but also makes producing food more expensive, which means more cost for farmers who simply cannot absorb it and it will have to be passed up the supply chain or risk the resilience of our food production.”

Cutting agricultural relief was one of several sweeping changes Ms Reeves made to inheritance tax on Wednesday.

From 2027, pension pots will be included in the value of an estate. The threshold at which the tax is payable has also been extended until 2030, which will see thousands more families dragged into paying the tax.

The Government was approached for comment.
