How to find hidden cameras in an Airbnb or hotel room

Probably one of the creepiest things you’d find in a hotel room (TikTik/@malwaretech)

It’s pretty much the stuff of horror films: hidden cameras tucked away in hotel rooms capturing all kinds of personal moments.

If you’ve never thought to look before, you may find the TikTok account of Marcus Hutchins particularly useful.

Hutchins, in case you weren’t aware, was the hacker who single-handedly stopped the global WannaCry cyber attack back in 2017.

Now he’s on TikTok and sharing videos with his 117k followers.

In one of these videos, he demonstrates how to sweep a hotel or Airbnb room for hidden cameras.

‘The first thing you are going to want to look for is devices that are conveniently placed where a creeper would want to look,’ Marcus explains.

‘Take this fire alarm, for instance. It is placed right above the bed.

‘One way to see if the device is a camera is to shine a bright light at it.

‘If you hit a camera lens, it’s going to get a blueish reflection.

‘Now you can test this by shining a light at your phone and seeing how the camera looks when placed under a flashlight.’

The same trick works on alarm clocks and two-way mirrors.

Marcus demonstrates by shining a torch onto the surface of an innocent-looking alarm clock to reveal the camera lens hiding beneath.

‘These cameras are really small as you can see here, so they can be hidden in anything, even a hole in the wall,’ Marcus added.

The video has racked up over 5.5 million views since being posted. Presumably from a lot of people who are now going to be very suspicious every time they enter a new hotel room.

‘New fear unlocked,’ as one commentator succinctly put it.
