Huawei is likely to launch ChatGPT rival Pangu Chat in July: what we know so far

With ChatGPT becoming the millions favorite app, it is plausible that more and more companies will come out with their own iterations of ChatGPT. Chinese tech giant Huawei, known for its innovative smartphones, is preparing to launch its own AI chatbot. As of now, ChatGPT, Bard, Ernie bot and many other AI chatbots are captivating people all over the world. Now, it seems that ChatGPT will soon have a worthy rival.

According to the latest reports, Huawei is likely to launch its rival ChatGPT on July 7. Huawei’s new AI software is known as Pangu Chat and is named after the company’s large-scale learning model. Pangu Chat will be launched at the Huawei Developer Conference (Cloud) event.

What do we know about Pangu Chat?

Recent reports suggest that Pangu Chat will initially only be available for businesses, and the company reportedly plans to sell it to government and enterprise customers. Pangu Chat is known to be based on the large-scale Pangu cloud model that comes with 100 billion parameters. This is lower than OpenAI’s GPT-3, which is said to have more than 175 billion parameters and GPT-4 is rumored to have crossed 1 trillion parameters.

Parameters are values that define the ability of the model. According to unconfirmed reports, Pangu Chat with its 100 billion parameters seems to be no match for OpenAI’s GPT-4.

Reportedly, huawei used more than 2000 Huawei Ascend 910 chipsets for more than two months of data training capabilities. Industry analysts revealed that more than 4,000 GPU/TPU cards are undergoing full-scale model training every year by the company. Interestingly, the cost of Huawei’s computing power has exceeded 960 million yuan in three years.

It was also reported that according to the Pangu model tests, the Pangu-E large model had an output of nearly 1.085 trillion parameters, which is equivalent to the capacity of GPT-4. The large-scale model Pangu-E is developed using the deep learning framework known as MindSpore. The framework can generate conversations on par with GPT-3.5.

More about the Pangu model

The model was launched by Huawei in 2021 and its iterative version 2.0 was presented in April last year. Currently, the model works with a large natural language processing (NLP) model, a weather model, and a large CV model.

The main layer of Pangu Series AI Large Models includes NLP Large Models, Scientific Computing Models, CV Large Models, etc. And the top layer comes with the company’s large models developed with partners.

It is reportedly the first Chinese pretrained large model with more than 100 billion parameters. The model has the ability to learn from small samples, maps, text, audio, and large-scale trimodal learning.

It should be noted that the company has not made any official confirmation and all the information mentioned above has been collected from various sources. If Huawei really plans to release a powerful AI chatbot, then it would be another rival for ChatGPT. In March this year, the Chinese search giant Baidu introduced its Ernie Bot with a reported 260 billion parameters.
