Hydrogen sulfide leak detected at Arkema facility in Houston

Arkema Inc., a chemical manufacturing company, reported a leak of hydrogen sulfide at its Houston facility Wednesday morning.

The company said in a CAER alert that the chemical was “confined” inside its facility. The leak was first detected a little after 9:15 a.m Wednesday, according to the alert. According to OSHA, hydrogen sulfide, exposure can cause a range of negative health effects depending on the level of exposure, from headaches and eye irritation at low levels, to respiratory failure and death. 

“Our emergency response teams are taking steps to stop the leak and clean up the release,” the alert said. “The safety of our workers and neighbors is the primary focus of our response.”
