In 2022, social safety illness and healthcare expenditure, measured as a proportion of GDP, stood at 8.1% at EU stage, reflecting 0.4 proportion factors (pp) lower in contrast with 2021 (8.5%). 

Among the many 24 EU international locations for which 2022 estimates can be found, social safety illness and healthcare expenditure was highest in France (10.0% of GDP), Germany (9.7%), Slovenia (8.6%), Austria (8.5%) and Belgium (7.8%), whereas it was lowest in Bulgaria (4.2%), Eire (4.6%), Hungary, Lithuania (each 4.7%) and Estonia (4.8%).

The one EU international locations to report a rise have been Luxembourg (+0.3 pp) and Slovenia (+0.1 pp). Cyprus maintained its expenditure on the 2021 stage. 

This data comes from early estimates on social safety expenditure, that are the principle headline indicators for the European System of built-in Social Safety Statistics (ESSPROS) and are offered by the reporting international locations on a voluntary foundation.
