Imran: Pakistan PM lashes out at Imran for ‘campaign’ against army chief – Times of India

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday criticized the president and former prime minister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan for launching a “vile, sinister and malicious” social media campaign over an assassination attempt on the General in Chief of the Army Asim Munir.
Sharif, whose term ends next month, ordered the authorities to take legal action against those involved in such “malicious” campaigns both at home and abroad.
He lashed out Imran a day after hundreds of Pakistani-Americans rallied outside the White House in Washington, demanding an end to state and government actions against the PTI boss and workers.
The prime minister noted that the media campaign against the armed forces and their boss did not fall within the realm of free speech, but was just a conspiracy, and it was a legal responsibility to stamp out that trend with all their might.
He pointed out that similar minds were involved in the conspiracy on May 9, when PTI protesters attacked government and army installations.
“It is a clear message to the May 9 planners, facilitators and manipulators that the conspiracy against Pakistan and its institutions will be crushed.” Sharif warned in an official statement issued by his office.
The prime minister described the smear campaigns as the result of the planning of criminals, who, according to him, have again acted against the political and economic stability of the country.
The new media campaign was an integral part of that abominable campaign, which was launched against the shuhada (martyrs), he maintained, referring to the attacks on military monuments.
Sharif said the nation would thwart such attempts in the same way it thwarted the May 9 attempt to spark violence and vandalism in the country, a reference to PTI supporters looting military and government installations following Imran’s arrest in an alleged corruption case. .
According to Sharif, Imran’s trick of using proxies to threaten the army chief claiming an assassination attempt has been widely exposed. “The former prime minister (Imran) was working desperately to force his return to power after failing in a methodically planned attack on state symbols,” the PTI chief said, the prime minister not realizing that “the moment of his policy of intimidation, the violence and hatred ended”.
“Through such damnable antics, he only exposes himself, the core of which is defined by putting his self-interest (seizure of power) above all else,” the prime minister said.
He reiterated that the people of Pakistan and the political parties strongly supported the Army Chief Gene Munir and the armed forces, and would thwart any attempts and conspiracies to undermine the prestige, honor and integrity of the Pakistan Army.
