Not a drop of rain or a cloud of wildfire smoke could stop more than 100,000 fans from flocking to the Governors Ball Music Festival over the weekend at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens.
Waves of revelers, decked out in pink tutus, elaborately designed fishnets and oversized cowboy hats, poured into the event that took place this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They beat Odesza and Diplo; bounced to Lizzo and Kendrick Lamar; and swung toward Haim and Omar Apollo through three different settings on the green fields surrounding the iconic Unisphere, the 140-foot-tall ball fit for…a ball.
On the first day of the festival, shrouded in a gray haze from either Canadian wildfire smoke, pyrotechnics, cigarettes or a combination of all three, music lovers amidst vaping hits and sipping beer , they talked about the inspirations for their outfits and their favorites. performances

How long have you lived in the city? I have only lived here for eight months. I am originally from Charlottesville, Virginia.
What made you decide to move here? I wanted to make video games and I feel like New York is a hub for media. I want to make games for change, like the ones that teach you about the environment, or just bloodshed. It depends.
Your outfit is giving off more romance than bloodshed. Are you currently in love? I am, but he doesn’t know it yet!

Tell me about your outfit. I decided I was going to do skirt day, so I found this petite jean and this random cow shirt from Buffalo Exchange, and I was like, “Might be a country hick!” The boots he already had and the hat I stole from him when he worked for this little mouse in Florida.
By little mouse in Florida, do you mean Disney? Yeah, and you can tell them I said that!

Was the matching blonde hair intentional too?

Who is Miss Zarah Misdeameanor? She’s a lovable, kind and relatable drag performer. When I take the stage, I’m here to bring joy to my queer brothers, sisters, and brothers.
Walk me through your outfit today. I’m wearing a smiley face t-shirt because I love smiles and happiness, like that’s what I stand for. My boots and hat are Akira’s, but I wish I hadn’t said that, because it’s like my drag secret.
Is Akira another drag queen? She’s not a drag performer; she is a complete store in Chicago. So now I can never go back and act.
Lives in: San Francisco
Are you in town just for Gov Ball? Yes, I just arrived yesterday. This is actually my first time in New York City.
What has surprised you the most about the festival? The crowd is definitely straighter than I imagined.
