India Box Office: ‘Deva’ Crosses $5 Million In A Week

Shahid Kapoor-starrer Hindi film Deva had an average opening at the ticket windows, but it picked pace and closed the first week at $5.4 million worldwide. Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, Deva features Kapoor as a cop in a nail-biting thriller aspiring to woo the masses.

Shahid Kapoor’s Deva crosses $5 million in 7 days

Deva also features Pooja Hegde, Kubbra Sait, Upendra Limaye, Pravessh Rana, Pavail Gulati, Manish Wadhwa, and Girish Kulkarni in important roles alongside Kapoor. Deva director Andrrews has previously made films such as Prathi Poovankozhi, Notebook, and How Old Are You? He makes his Hindi debut with Deva which released in theatres on January 31.

Deva Box Office Report

Releasing in estimated 2200 screens across India, Deva was expected to make a big splash at the box office. The film, however, had an average opening. In India, it scored nearly $770,000 on Friday. The movie managed an opening score of $1.1 million worldwide.

The collections rose significantly on Deva’s second day at the ticket windows. On Saturday, the film doubled the box office figures and made a global gross collection of $2.5 million. By the end of the first weekend, Deva grossed $3.8 million worldwide.

With an expected dip in the earnings over the next few days, Deva has crossed $5 million-mark in seven days worldwide. In India alone, the film made $3.7 million over the first week.

Deva

Andrrews’ Deva appears to be a reworked version of his own 2013 film, Mumbai Police with only the basic premise being the same. The Malayalam original, written by Bobby-Sanjay, featured Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role alongside Jayasurya. The lead cop in both films (Deva’s Dev Ambre, and Mumbai Police’s Antony Moses) solve a case right before the accident which result in a major memory loss. Tasked with solving it again, the plot offers twists and turns that make for a perfect recipe for thrillers.

The Hindi film is a gripping thriller, enhanced by Kapoor’s stellar performance which fans have seen in films such as Haider, and Udta Punjab. Kapoor gets to play arrogant and trigger-happy cop as well as a quieter and more humane police officer in the same film with Deva. The actor proves once again that he is more than just good at his game.

However, the portions introduced, seemingly, for the purpose of catering to the Hindi-belt audience and serving Shahid Kapoor’s stardom are too forced to appear smooth and swaggy. Instead, they make the narrative incoherent. The film offers some thrilling moments, especially the action sequences, but it fails to weave it all together with a strong script. While Kapoor offers a brilliant showcase reel for his acting chops, Deva is not a film to be counted among the best.

Deva: Competition at box office

The Hindi romantic comedy, Loveyapa, released in theatres along with Deva on February 7. Directed by Advait Chauhan (Secret Superstar), the film features Khushi Kapoor and Junaid Khan in lead roles. Kapoor, who is the daughter of film producer Boney Kapoor makes her theatrical debut with Loveyapa. Previously, she was seen in the Netflix India original, The Archies. Loveyapa also marks the theatrical debut for Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan, who was previously seen in Maharaj headlined by Jaideep Ahlawat.
