India Box Office Report: ‘Do Aur Do Pyaar’ Scores Better Than ‘LSD 2’

A week after two big-budget Hindi films (Maidaan and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan) had a disappointing run at the ticket windows, two small-budget film released in theatres, and are winning hearts of the audiences. Made at low budget and released across fewer screens (than last week’s releases), both LSD 2 and Do Aur Do Pyaar have garnered critical appreciation and have performed fairly well at the box office. While Do Aur Do Pyaar earned $340,000 in three days at the ticket windows, LSD 2 closed its first weekend below $140,000.

Starring Vidya Balan, Ileana D’Souza, Pratik Gandhi and Sendhil Ramamurthy, Do Aur Do Pyaar released in 840 screens worldwide, with around 500 of those in India. The producers of the film opened with a one-plus-one offer for movie goers in select cinemas across India – buy one ticket and get another one for free. The film made nearly $80,000 opening collection worldwide and the collections rose slightly over the weekend, thanks to a good word-of-mouth. It made a total of $225,000 by Saturday and by the end of its first weekend.

In India, the film made an opening collection of $66,000 and the earnings soared on Saturday, making it to $115,000. On Sunday, the collections for the film rose to $150,000. India total for the first weekend for Do Aur Do Pyaar stood at a little less than $340,000.

Do Aur Do Pyaar has been directed by debutante Shirsha Guha Thakurta and explores the themes of love, marriage and infidelity in the lives of a young couple in current times. Written by Suprotim Sengupta, Amrita Bagchi, and Eisha Chopra, Do Aur Do Pyaar is an official remake of Azazel Jacobs’s 2017 film The Lovers.

On the other hand, filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee’s (of Shanghai, Titli fame) latest directorial outing LSD 2 made a humble $17,000 opening in India and the weekend total in India stood short of $90,000 at the Indian ticket windows. Given the film’s genre and the fact that it is limited to the adult audience, the collections are not too far off trade expectations.

Love Sex Aur Dokha 2 aka LSD 2 is a rare harsh, real and dystopian look at the direction in which our world is spearheading in this era of digital fame and identity. Banerjee co-wrote the film along with Shubham and Prateek Vats. The film features Swaroopa Ghosh, Nimrit Ahluwalia, Swastika Mukherjee, Bonita Rajpurohit, and Paritosh Tiwari. Bollywood stars Anu Malik, Tusshar Kapoor and Mouni Roy also have special appearances in the film that revolves around the intermingling world of reality shows and social media, intertwined with emotional existence of human beings.

Meanwhile, Dev Patel’s Monkey Man continues to rule the charts even in its second weekend at the ticket windows in the US. The film has made it to Comscore’s
SCOR
list of global top grossers for the weekend ending April 21. Monkey Man ranked at the tenth slot on the global list with a worldwide total of nearly $23 million. Earning $2.2 million in the US markets this weekend alone, the film was also listed at the ninth slot on Comscore’s list of top grossing films in the US this weekend. It is yet to get a theatrical release in India.
