India election results: Modi to meet allies as opposition plans next move

India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh, delivered what is arguably the biggest setback for Modi’s BJP in the 2024 election: The party, which had 62 out of the state’s 80 seats on offer, won only 33 this time.

Sakshi Maharaj, a BJP member of parliament who has previously often faced accusations of hate speech against Muslims, blamed “traitors” for the debacle.

“The party will evaluate the results, and I will tell them what I think,” said the MP who won re-election from the Unnao constituency in Uttar Pradesh. “Some internal traitors cost us the election,” he added, referencing divisions within the BJP.

The opposition INDIA coalition won 43 seats in the state, which sends most MPs to the country’s parliament.
