India’s senior men’s soccer team will face the first test of their Asian Cup aspirations when they take on a young Lebanese side in the Hero Intercontinental Cup final on Sunday.
The title decider will take place here at the Kalinga Stadium, which earlier saw the completion of the league stage in which India emerged as leaders with seven points. Lebanon, who finished second with five points, is the challenger as India looks to regain their winning rhythm after drawing their last league match 0-0 with first (on Thursday).
“Things were in our favor in the last game and it could have been a good win. But it didn’t happen, and now we must continue our efforts and reach our goal in the final,” Stimac said before the title fight. The draw in the last match also ended India’s seven-match winning streak. Stimac said he hoped to see his team regain the winning touch in the final. “I would have been worried if we weren’t creating chances, but that hasn’t been the case in the tournament,” he said. “Our guys are playing with a lot of faith and we have to keep supporting them to keep moving up,” Stimac said.
