Indonesia prepares to launch the largest solar panel industry in Southeast Asia

Jakarta. A senior government official revealed on Tuesday that Indonesia would have the largest integrated solar panel industry in the region, although the investor involved in this project remains a mystery.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is set to launch this project in the coming weeks.

“We have a big announcement to launch an integrated solar panel industry. President Jokowi will launch the project at the end of this month or early (August),” Dadan Kusdiana, director general of renewable energy at the Ministry of Energy, said at the 2023 ASEAN Solar Summit in Jakarta.

“We will see that Indonesia will probably have the largest integrated solar power (industry) in the region.”

The new facility is expected to help both Indonesia and ASEAN achieve the target of 23 percent renewable energy use by 2025 and the ultimate goal of net zero emissions, Dadan added.

The official did not reveal many details about the plans. However, he did leave some clues as to who Indonesia would partner with in building this integrated solar panel industry. The investor has previously made visits to Indonesia to decide where it would build this project.

“So we’ve already secured a partner, but I won’t say who it is. But we have had intense discussions. We have visited them and they have also come here. They have chosen the location, but (those details) are for the president to announce,” Dadan told reporters after the summit.

“If you ask the scale (of the integrated solar panel project), it is beyond 10 gigawatts. (This partnership) comes from a producer that has a sizeable global market share in solar panel production,” Dadan said.
