Intellasia East Asia News – 1,000 Tengah households signed in for energy-saving centralised cooling system

Nearly 1,000 households have indicated their desire to avail of the centralised cooling system (CCS) within the new Tengah estate, where around 8,000 Build-To-Order (BTO) units have been launched so far, reported The Straits Times.

One of the many smart features to be rolled out in Tengah, the energy-efficient system enables households to save about 15% to 20% in upfront costs compared with present market rates, and up to 30% in life cycle costs, explained SP Group, the energy provider that runs the system in Tengah.

The CCS – which is more energy-efficient than conventional air-conditioning systems – will see chilled water being piped into flats from centralised chillers installed at the rooftops of selected HDB blocks.

It will be powered by solar energy generated by horizontal and vertical solar panels on the rooftops of HDB blocks.

Meanwhile, the MyTengah app, run by SP Group, also allows residents to control and monitor their energy usage at home.

It also enables residents to locate electric vehicle charging points as well as accumulate points by participating in sustainable activities which could be exchanged for rewards.

The lift lobby of each HDB block will also feature a digital dashboard that tracks the utilities consumption of the block and impact on the environment.

SP Group said the eco-boards will also feature tips on reducing water and electrical consumption, while promoting “sustainable behaviour through utilities-savings competitions between blocks”.

To learn more about the CCS as well as the other eco-friendly solutions to be featured in Tengah, future residents can visit the new MyTengah Experience Centre located at HDB Hub in Toa Payoh Central.

While walk-ins are allowed, interested parties are encouraged to make advance bookings, subject to capacity limits.

The 97 sq m experience centre could accommodate about 16 visitors at any one time.

Tengah will be Singapore’s first town to offer a large-scale centralised cooling system, said S Harsha, Managing Director of Sustainable Energy Solutions in Singapore for SP Group.

He also revealed plans to provide homeowners with predictive air-conditioning maintenance services.

“This is part of the end-to-end service SP Group hopes to provide, on top of the regular maintenance of the centralised chillers,” he said as quoted by The Straits Times.

About 98% of households introduced to the CCS by SP Group staff had signed in for the service. However, not all 8,000 households were contacted by SP Group due to rules enforced during the circuit breaker period as well as in-person restrictions because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Payment for the new system will be made on the day flat owners collect the keys to their new units, which will have Daikin air-conditioning units pre-installed.

SP group declined to disclose the exact cost of the CCS.
