Intellasia East Asia News – 14 conveyed to hospital after bus accident at Bukit Batok bus interchange

Fourteen persons were conveyed to hospital after an accident involving a collision between two buses at Bukit Batok bus interchange on Sunday (11 July).

In a post on its Facebook page on Sunday night, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said its personnel assessed 17 persons for injuries. Eight were conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, four to National University Hospital, two to Tan Tock Seng Hospital while the remaining three had minor injuries and refused conveyance to the hospital.

SCDF said it received a call for help at the location at 5.05pm. “Upon SCDF’s arrival, a passenger bus was found lying on its side. Eight persons were inside the bus while another nine were found outside the bus.”

SCDF rescuers entered via the rear windscreen of the bus which had shattered. They created an additional point of entry at the front of the bus by using an electrical saw to cut through the front windscreen. Once inside, rescue equipment were used to cut several poles off so as to create space for the casualties to be rescued safely.

Of the persons inside the bus, two were carried off the bus on stretchers by the rescuers while the remaining six were guided on foot out to safety.

In a separate post on Facebook, Bukit Batok Member of Parliament Murali Pillai said there was a collision at the bus interchange between two buses. “One bus was pulling into the interchange whereas the other bus was pulling out. The impact caused one of the buses to mount a kerb and fall to its side,” he added.

Murali thanked the SCDF for its swift action and said the matter will be investigated by the authorities.
