Intellasia East Asia News – Employers should focus on digital, creative content sectors: minister

Tourism and Creative Economy minister Sandiaga Salahudin Uno has called on tourism and creative economy players to pay attention to the digital sector in business development amid the pandemic.

Uno pointed to a significant growth in the areas of application, gaming, television, and digital content during the pandemic.

“Some 34 million tourism and creative economy players are under stress, and several of them have lost their jobs and sources of income. However, I believe that our creative economy can surmount over the challenges by providing talent that can replenish the digital economy system,” Uno said in a statement here on Thursday.

“If we observe the digital acceleration rate, nowadays, people who only sell (products) online (also) offer creative content,” he noted.

Transformation in every aspect of life towards digitalisation has given birth to occupations related to the digital ecosystem, Uno remarked.

The minister believes it was a good opportunity and challenge for people, including the tourism and creative economy players in Indonesia.

At the opening of the Glints X Virtual Career Week on Wednesday (July 21) Uno noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had compelled tourism and creative economy practitioners to perpetually innovate, collaborate, and adapt to surmount over the challenges.

“The COVID-19 (pandemic) has forced us to broaden our skills, as 60 percent of the job offers we will come across out there during and after pandemic are those that previously did not exist,” he stated.

Currently, the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry has been encouraging the digitalisation of tourism and creative economy practitioners through some programmes, such as ‘Proudly Indonesian-Made National Movement’ (Gerakan Nasional Bangga Buatan Indonesia).

“Through this movement, we want to (motivate the people to develop a sense) of pride for products made by Indonesians as well as encourage digital economy practitioners to always innovate, adapt, and collaborate,” Uno stated.

He worked with Glints, a digital platform for millennial career development, in collaboration with the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry in order to broaden the skills and talents of tourism and creative economy practitioners in Indonesia.

“Hence, tourism and creative economy practitioners can emerge as winners in the pandemic and survive (through it) as well as create job opportunities for the people, particularly those with regard to digital transformation,” Uno elaborated.

Uno compelled tourism and creative economy practitioners to work in a hard, smart, and comprehensive manner by using their networks.

“I believe with innovation, adaptation, and collaboration, we can build better careers,” Uno affirmed.

The event was attended by key figures from the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, including deputy of Digital Economy and Creative Products Muhammad Neil El Himam and director of Creative Film, Television, and Animation Industry Syaifullah.
