Intellasia East Asia News – Former police public relations chief to join John Lee’s CE office: sources

John Tse Chun-chung, former chief superintendent who chaired police’s daily press conference during the social unrest three years ago, will join the Chief Executive’s Office under John Lee Ka-chiu for public relations, according to sources.

It is understood that Tse has been working in the Chief Executive’s Office already and his priority is the public announcement of Lee’s new cabinet next week.

Sources added he will also be given other tasks apart from contacting media and works on public relations.

The 47-year-old former top cop joined the Security Bureau in February this year as the Principal Assistant Secretary to help fight the fifth wave of Covid outbreak.

Tse graduated from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) with a BBA degree in 1999 and worked in a bank very shortly before joining the force the same year.

He joined Police Public Relation Branch in May 2015 and was appointed as the head of the branch in March 2018.

Starting from July 2019, Tse staged press conferences on weekdays to explain police’s controversial law enforcement actions.

On July 22, 2019, a day after the Yuen Long station mob attack, Tse defended two officers who walked away from the scene and said although they were equipped with guns, they didn’t wear any protective gear and using gun may cause greater danger at that time.

Waiting for reinforcement would be the appropriate option for them, according to Tse.

Tse’s place was taken by chief superintendent Kwok Ka-chuen in late-November the same year. He was then appointed the commander of Kwai Tsing District in mid-February 2020.
