Intellasia East Asia News – Marcos tries Pinoy food truck fare in New York

President Marcos feasted on famous Filipino food sold in food trucks on the last day of his six-day working visit here.

Photos by Information and Communications Technology Assistant Secretary Anna Mae Yu Lamentillo and the office of Speaker Martin Romualdez showed Marcos, First Lady Lisa Araneta-Marcos and some government officials ordering meals from food trucks in front of the Carlyle Hotel.

They ordered food from two food trucks. The first food truck served bulalo and barbeque while the second truck had pancit, lumpia and ice cream.

In 2010, the late president Benigno Aquino III stopped for hotdogs in New York City.

During his meeting with the Filipino community in New Jersey last Monday, Marcos said he and Lisa met in New York but were not able to visit the city for more than two decades. At a forum organised by the Asia Society last Friday, Marcos said he and Lisa missed New York “terribly.”

“I spent a good deal of time as well in New York, perhaps not as a permanent resident or working here but simply because I learned to enjoy and really have great affection for the city and its people,” the President said.

“And we miss it terribly and we are very happy to be given the chance to come back,” he added.

Marcos said he had tried very hard to maximise every single hour of his stay in the city.

“I have been here to make these contacts and as you described them, ‘I have a bucketload of meetings’ which I think have gone rather well,” Marcos told Asia Society president and chief executive officer Kevin Rudd.

“But as I said, it doesn’t take much just to be able to look out my window and to see New York, the Central Park, to see New York at night, to walk along the street, to get my Sabrett and my souvlaki sandwich, go to Katz’s to have a pastrami on rye,” he added.

A Palace source said the First Couple watched live shows during their visit here.

Marcos watched a concert of Eric Clapton at the Madison Square Garden last September 18, the first day of his working visit.

Clapton is the singer behind the hits “Tears in Heaven,” “Change the World” and “Wonderful Tonight.”

Lisa, meanwhile, watched the Broadway show “Into the Woods” at the St. James Theater last September 21.

Marcos capped his visit by holding a press conference with members of the Philippine media.

“I consider the trip a success and overall, I am satisfied with the work that we have done. We were able to do everything that we wanted to do. All the people we wished to talk to were really ready to talk to us,” he said in Filipino.

“I’m very happy we came, I am very happy with the results of the visit.”
