Intellasia East Asia News – Rice baron pins B50m theft on kin

Phitsanulok: A elderly businessperson said he will file a legal complaint after allegedly discovering that 50 million baht has disappeared from his bank accounts. He believes the culprit is his adopted daughter.

Prasert Kaewpakapongsri, 77, went to the provincial Damrongtham centre to complain that the money had vanished from six of his bank accounts. He is also lodging a complaint with the Crime Suppression Division.

Prasert said he has asked the bank for a detailed statement as he claims the money was withdrawn without his knowledge.

However, the bank only provided records of three accounts. Prasert said he has also brought the matter to the attention of the Bank of Thailand, which directed the commercial bank that safeguards Prasert’s money to look into the allegations.

According to Prasert, the statements showed the money had been taken out by a former bank manager who is the husband of one of his adopted daughters.

The former manager made several withdrawals totalling 50 million baht without using passbooks.

Prasert claims to have made a fortune from selling rice at a market and lending money. His net value is estimated at over 100 million baht.

He has two biological and two adopted children. The latter were reportedly unhappy at how Prasert had decided to divide up his estate among them.
