Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Scoot ferried a total of 1,452,500 passengers in April this year, up 62.7 per cent from the previous month, SIA Group reported.
SIA’s April operating results released on Tuesday (17 May) come weeks after Singapore relaxed border measures by allowing fully vaccinated travellers to enter Singapore quarantine-free and without COVID-19 tests from 1 April. Pre-departure COVID-19 test requirements were also removed from 26 April.
SIA Group noted in its results that many of its key markets had also further relaxed their border control measures.
Both its airlines carried 1,216.9 per cent more passengers in April, compared to the same period a year ago.
In April, SIA also resumed operations to Davao and Cebu in Philippines, while Scoot resumed flights to Hat Yai and Kota Kinabalu in Thailand and Malaysia respectively.
The passenger load factor in April stood at 72.7 per cent, the highest since the pandemic. This was an increase of 18.2 percentage points from the previous month, or 59 percentage points from a year ago. Passenger load factor improved across all route regions for both airlines.
As at end April, SIA Group’s passenger network covered 95 destinations, including Singapore, with SIA serving 71 destinations and Scoot serving 45 destinations.
Group passenger capacity reached 57 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in April, six percentage points above the month before.
Increase in cargo capacity
Resumption of passenger flights led to a 35.1 per cent increase in cargo capacity for SIA in April. Cargo loads fell 2.1 per cent as cargo demand was affected by pandemic controls in China.
SIA Group’s results come as Japan’s Tourism Agency announced that it would start allowing small group tours to enter from later this month ahead of the broader resumption of tourism in the country. Singapore is part of the four countries allowed to participate in these test tours, which are required to be planned in conjunction with travel agencies. Tourists are also required to be triple vaccinated.
