International interest: British media covering the DNC

It’s not just media here in the U.S. that’s watching the election closely. American politics are popular across the pond, too.

D.C.-based Simon Marks is the chief American correspondent for British-based LBC and gives constant radio and TV updates on American politics for those across the pond.

“Night and day, night and day, from the minute Biden announced that he was dropping out of the race, suddenly, the amount of interest in the U.K. in this election ramped up beyond anything I’ve ever seen before,” Marks said of the English view point.

69 News first met Marks at the Republican National Convention last month. Now at the Democratic National Convention, on air, he’s described Democrats thinking they were arriving at a wake with Biden but instead coming to a celebration with the Harris rise.

“I think people in the U.K. anticipated a Trump victory when Biden was in position. Now he’s not, and like everybody else, they think it’s all up for grabs,” Marks said.

At the RNC, former Prime Ministers Liz Truss and Boris Johnson made appearances for Donald Trump.

Marks says it’s happening in Chicago for Harris, just with a lower profile.

“It’s not just the British government. There are multiple diplomats here from multiple countries, all of them now seeking to do the same kind of thing as they were doing in Milwaukee. They wanted to build ties to the Trump team. Now, they want to build ties to the Harris-Walz people,” Marks said.
