International Women’s Day 2023: Python, data science, Korean language: this is what women want to learn

More than 40 percent of online students are women, according to reports from various edtech companies. Internshala Trainings, an Internshala training platform, has published a report showing that there has been a 7.2 times growth in the number of women opting for e-learning courses. A similar report from learning platform Coursera also noted that the number of female trainees in online programs rose to 38 percent, up from 24 percent in 2016.

Some of the best courses chosen by women have been ‘Fundamentals: Data, Data Everywhere’, ‘Project Management Fundamentals’, ‘English for Career Development’, UX Design, Python Courses, Speaking Programs and more .

Interestingly, almost 41 percent of these women were from Tier III cities in India. The same was observed in another report from iNurture, an educational technology company. The report showed a growing trend of women from Tier II cities opting for specialized courses to improve their skills and stay relevant in the ever-evolving job market. According to the report, there has been a 63% increase in female enrollments from Tier II cities in India in 2022 compared to 2020. The growth was driven by cities like Coimbatore, Indore and vijayawada.

This has been followed by an increase in overall booking for gigs in Tier II cities as well, a report from Taskmo, a gig discovery platform, showed. The participation of women in Tier 1 cities is 42%, 40% in Tier 2 cities and 18% in Tier 3 cities.

Conventional courses for women

The report also showed that the participation of women in the informal economy has risen from 24% to 36% this year, of which the majority of self-employed women belong to the 19-35 age group (a total of 83% ).

Another Coursera report has shown that the maximum number of unconventional courses chosen by female students on its website are related to Korean and Chinese language, creative writing, novel writing, food and health, nutrition, poetry writing, modern art, photography and more.
