Iran-US war latest: Tehran warns of ‘devastating’ retaliation after Trump’s threat

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) this morning said there were no signs to indicate that North Korea was providing Iran with weapons or other war-related supplies.

The spy agency’s officials told lawmakers the North could be taking a cautious approach to preserve the possibility of dialogue with the US, according to two lawmakers who attended the closed-door briefing.

North Korea’s foreign ministry has condemned the US-Israeli attacks on Iran as illegal, but the NIS said Pyongyang has not sent an official condolence message over the death of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in recent years has embraced the idea of a “new Cold War” and attempted to expand cooperation with countries confronting the US, including an economic delegation sent to Iran in April 2024.

Bahrain’s foreign minister Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani said that Iran’s weeks-long chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz has created an “escalating crisis that threatens global stability, food security, and the foundational principles of international law”.

He urged action by the UN Security Council on a Bahrain draft proposal, which has faced crucial opposition from Russia, China and France over several issues, including language authorising the use of force to open the strait.

All three countries wield veto power over any resolution in the 15-member council.

The vote on the heavily revised and watered-down draft was scheduled to take place last week, but has been postponed due to lack of consensus.

Al-Zayani noted that the “window of opportunity is narrowing day by day” and failure by the international community to act “sends a dangerous message that vital arteries of the global economy can be threatened without consequence.”

Since the U.S. and Israel struck Iran on February 28, thousands of people have been killed across the Middle East.

Those strikes triggered Iranian attacks on Israel, U.S. bases and the Gulf states, while opening a new front in Lebanon.

Here are the latest death tolls reported.

U.S.-based rights group HRANA said 3,540 people have been killed since the war erupted. It said 1,616 of those were civilians, including at least 244 children.

Iran executed ​a man named Ali Fahim convicted over an attempt to storm a military facility ⁠and access an armoury during unrest in January, state media said today, after the Supreme Court upheld ⁠his sentence.

Iran has ​already ⁠executed three others linked to the incident, including Amirhossein ⁠Hatami earlier last week, and Mohammadamin ​Biglari ⁠and Shahin Vahedparast ‌on Sunday.

Another man linked to the same case is believed ‌to face execution in the ‌coming days, according to rights group Amnesty International. Nationwide anti-government protests in January ⁠were repressed in the biggest crackdown in the Islamic Republic’s history.

US prsident Donald Trump in January claimed that Washington was informed that Iran had stopped such executions following threats from the White House.

However, Iran has executed several people, mostly accused of spying for Israel, since the US and Israel attacked Tehran on 28 February.

Global oil prices have jumped sharply above $110 (£83.38) a barrel, and major stocks ‌were mixed Monday in Asia following Donald Trump’s expletive-laden social media post that threatened to bomb civilian infrastructure in Iran.

Brent crude rose by 0.7 percent to $109.80 while US-traded oil jumped by 0.8 per cent at $112.40 as the markets opened Monday in Asia.

Japan’s Nikkei climbed 1.65 per cent, South Korea’s Kospi advanced 2 per cent and India’s BSE Sensex Index was also up by 0.25 per cent.

At least nine people were killed in overnight strikes across Iran, the state-run IRAN newspaper reported.

Airstrikes were reported on Ahvaz, Bandar Lengeh, Karaj and Shiraz regions.

A Ghanaian national has sustained injuries in Abu Dhabi from falling shrapnel, the city’s media office said.

It said the incident took place at the Rinn Systems Company in Musaffah following a successful interception by air defences.

Oil prices climbed today on continuing fears of supply losses because of the US-Israeli war with Iran.

Brent crude futures rose $1.71, or 1.6 per cent, to $110.74 a barrel.

US West Texas Intermediate crude futures gained $0.71, or 0.6 per cent, to trade ​at $112.25 per barrel.

Iran’s military has warned of a “much more devastating” retaliation if Donald Trump follows through on his threat to target the country’s bridges and power plants.

“If attacks on civilian targets are repeated, the next stages of our offensive and retaliatory operations will be much more devastating and widespread,” said a spokesperson for the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, the operational command of the Iranian armed forces.

This warning comes after Trump threatened to destroy Iran’s civilian infrastructure in an extraordinary swear-laden rant on Truth Social.

“Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, ​in ⁠Iran,” Trump said.

“There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F***** Strait, you crazy ba******, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH!”

Two people were found dead under rubble due to an Iranian missile strike on a residential building in Israel’s northern city of Haifa, Israel’s fire and rescue authority said today.

The rescue mission, which started last evening, was still ongoing this morning as two other people remain under the rubble.

Paramedics said they rushed to the scene and searched through the rubble to dig out the injured, finding an older man in serious condition.

They added that three other people, including a baby, were slightly injured.
