A local council has poured cold water on rumours a Disneyland theme park could soon be built, dashing the hopes of millions of Australians.
Werribee, which is 30 minutes from Melbourne‘s CBD, became the centre of speculation on Wednesday that it could be the new location for the park.
A Wyndham City Council spokesman revealed they had not been approached about the the matter.
‘Wyndham City has not been approached by any organisation in relation to plans for a Disney-style’ park in our municipality,’ he told the Herald Sun.
Werribee is home to the Werribee Open Range Zoo, Werribee Mansion and western sewage treatment plant.
Speculation has been rife that Australia could build its very own Disneyland as the US-based entertainment company looks to expand internationally.
The Walt Disney Company revealed last September it was developing plans ‘to accelerate and expand investment’ in its parks and experiences.
The amount they intend to spend would nearly double capital expenditure over a decade, to $60bn – it is understood this includes three international theme parks.
Disney Parks, Experiences and Products chairman Josh D’Amaro said in the company statement the parks ‘stand alone when it comes to scale’.
‘And while our scale is impressive, we have no shortage of space or regions of the world in which to tell new stories,’ he said.
‘We have an ambitious growth story that is supported by a proven track record and a bold vision for the future of our Parks business.’
Victoria Tourism Industry Council chief Felicia Mariani said the state ‘desperately’ needed more tourist attractions.
However, she also dispelled the rumour that Werribee Disneyland was a possibility, saying whispers had been circulating for many years.
‘Whether it is Disney or some other type of major attraction, the reality is those sort of new attractions are really critical to driving visitation into Victoria, and in particular having something that sits in the greater Melbourne region, as opposed to Melbourne CBD,’ she said.
There have been attempts in the past to attract the American juggernaut to open a theme park in Australia at sites such as Avalon Airport in Victoria, the Gold Coast in Queensland, Sydney or Adelaide.
Werribee, located between Melbourne and Geelong, was once going to be home to African Safari World – a $220m proposed amusement park that would have had some of the world’s biggest and best rides.
Earmarked to have been set in the grounds of the Werribee Open Range Zoo and to open in 2010, the state government rejected the plan in 2008, saying it would cost taxpayers too much.
The Walt Disney Company currently has theme parks across three continents – North America, Europe and Asia – and are in four countries – USA, China, Paris and Japan.
The amusement and theme parks worldwide have about 50,000 visitors each day and employ about 223,000 people.
The most visited in 2022 was Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, with about 17.13m guests attending the park.
Daily Mail Australia contacted Wyndham City Council for comment.
