Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi recently released an Urdu poetry album ‘Shayarana – Sartaj’. The heart and soul behind the Urdu album is Satinder Sartaaj. It comprises beautiful poetry in the nearly extinct ‘Urdu’ language of Punjab. Speaking at his event, Javed Akhtar emphasized the importance of the Urdu language and the role Punjab played in its past growth and prominence. The lyricist and writer also emphasized that the Urdu language does not belong to Pakistan or Egypt but to ‘Hindustan’.
Explaining the importance of the Urdu language, Javed Akhtar said: “Urdu does not come from anywhere else… it is our own language. It is not spoken outside of Hindustan… Pakistan also emerged after the separation of India, before it was just part of India. So, the language is not spoken outside of Hindustan…”
“Punjab has a great contribution towards Urdu and it is the language of India! But why did you leave this language? Because of partition? Because of Pakistan? Urdu should be paid attention to. Before it was only Hindustan, Pakistan later seceded from Hindustan. Now Pakistan said Kashmir is ours…will you believe it? I think ‘No’! Similarly, Urdu is a language of Hindustan (i) and still is (so). Today in “Today, the new generation of young people speak less Urdu and Hindi in our country. Country. Today more attention is on English. We must speak Hindi because it is our national language.” He further said: “Language is not based on religions, but on regions. If language was based on religion, all of Europe would have a language. That is why language is not of religion, but of region.” .
Meanwhile, Javed Akhtar recently created a stir with his statement against Pakistan. Akhtar was heard to say that the perpetrators and plotters of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks were still “roaming freely” in Pakistan. A video of the poet and lyricist has gone viral on social media where he is allegedly heard speaking about the “bitterness” in the hearts of Indians over the 11/26 attacks. Calling himself someone who has made comments that were “slightly controversial and sensitive in nature” in India, Akhtar said he was not afraid to speak his mind while in Pakistan.
