JD Vance agrees to debate Tim Walz on Oct. 1

Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) said Thursday that he accepted an invitation from CBS News for a vice presidential debate on Oct. 1.

Why it matters: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said earlier this week that he had accepted the Oct. 1 invitation, meaning the two running mates will share the stage at least once before the election.

  • Vance also said that he accepted an invite from CNN for a VP debate on Sept. 18.
  • The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to Axios’ question as to whether Walz will accept the Sept. 18 debate invite.
  • Having multiple VP debates would be unprecedented. In each of the past 10 presidential cycles, the running mates have debated a single time.

What he’s saying: “The American people deserve as many debates as possible, which is why President Trump has challenged Kamala to three of them already,” Vance wrote on X.

  • “Not only do I accept the CBS debate on October 1st, I accept the CNN debate on September 18th as well. I look forward to seeing you at both!”

The big picture: Walz said Wednesday that accepted the invite from CBS News for the Oct. 1 debate. The network said that it offered the candidates four possible dates: Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1 and Oct. 8.

  • Former President Trump and Vice President Harris have agreed to a presidential debate on Sept. 10 set to be hosted by ABC News. Plans for additional debates have yet to be finalized.
