Jeff Bezos is suing Nasa over a deal it made with Elon Musk

Blue Origin, the private space company owned by Jeff Bezos has decided to sue Nasa.

A little under a month since the company successfully flew billionaire Bezos to the edge of space, it’s picking a fight over a contract awarded to arch-rival SpaceX.

Nasa awarded SpaceX a contract worth £2.1 billion to build a lunar lander for its Artemis mission to the moon.

But Blue Origin says there were ‘fundamental issues’ with the deal and says it’s unfair.

Originally, Nasa was going to hand the contract to both companies, but had to choose one due to a funding shortfall.

It chose SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk. Who also happens to be a billionaire and has had spats with Bezos in the past.

In a US court filing, Blue Origin said it thinks two providers are needed to build the landing system, which will carry astronauts down to the moon’s surface.

‘We firmly believe that the issues identified in this procurement and its outcomes must be addressed to restore fairness, create competition and ensure a safe return to the Moon for America,’ Blue Origin said.

Nasa has not responded to the suit yet, but has until October 12 to do so.

The space agency has been defended by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) – a US watchdog – which said it hadn’t ‘acted improperly’ to award the contract to a single company.

SpaceX, meanwhile, is keeping quiet.
