First lady Jill Biden has rejected a proposal by a Republican presidential candidate that older politicians take a mental competency test, calling the idea “ludicrous.”
2024 Republican nominee Nikki Haley, a former US ambassador to the UN and governor of South Carolina, said politicians over the age of 75 should take mandatory mental competency tests. The idea is a hint to her former boss, donald trump76, who is also seeking the nomination by 2024, and President Joe Biden80 years old, who has not yet announced his re-election campaign.
Jill Biden said her family would not participate in Haley’s idea.
“We support whatever he wants to do,” he said. CNNby Arlette Saenz. “If he’s in, we’re in there. If he wants to do something else, we’re there too.”
The first lady rebuffed those who say her husband is too old for a second term by pointing to his recent surprise trip to Kyiv to commemorate the first anniversary of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“How many 30-year-olds could travel to Poland, get on the train, travel nine more hours, go to Ukraine, meet President (Volodymyr) Zelensky?” she asked. “Then, look at the man. Look what he’s doing. Look what he keeps doing every day.”
