What we know about the EFF candidate’s death
Reports of the cold-blooded killing first surfaced on Sunday night, but it was only today that confirmation of the EFF candidate’s passing was made official. It’s understood that this was a politically motivated assassination in Caluza, and Ward 20 for Pietermaritzburg has now lost a genuine contender for its councillor position.
Police swiftly opened a case of murder, and hope to resolve this tragic incident soon. Thulani Shangase was holding talks with other party officials before he was taken down by a hail of bullets. No arrests have been made yet.

Another political killing in KZN
The EFF candidate’s death marks a twin tragedy in KZN, after ANC nominee Siyabonga Mkhize was also assassinated within the past few days. Contesting Ward 101 in eThekwini, the politically active citizen was killed alongside a fellow party member. The Cato Crest community has been rocked by the demise of one of their own.
On Monday morning, it was revealed that two people had been detained for the murder of Siyabonga Mkhize.
