5 minutes earlier than halftime Sunday evening, Juventus have been handed a lifeline. In a primary half the place Milan noticed increasingly of the ball as time went on, issues out of the blue modified when Malick Thiaw pulled down Moise Kean and noticed a straight pink for it just some seconds later, leaving the house facet out of the blue down a person for the subsequent 50 or so minutes.

So it begged the query: “What are you gonna do with it, Juve?”

Not a complete heck of lots, however sufficient to get the one purpose of the evening and dangle on from there.

For the second straight trip of a global break this season, Juventus bought a big-time end in a big-time take a look at. That one was a dismantling of one in all their former managers on the Allianz Stadium, this time round was an absolute grinder of a 1-0 win over AC Milan in entrance of a sellout crowd at San Siro. The man who determined it on the scoreboard? It simply so occurred to be former Milan midfielder Manuel Locatelli, whose long-range shot benefited from a giant deflection on what proved to be Juve’s first shot of the evening and previous 40-year-old keeper Antonio Mirante to place Juve forward with just below half an hour to go.

Locatelli isn’t any stranger to scoring long-range efforts on this rivalry recreation, though it got here on the opposite facet of issues again when he was an adolescent.

On that evening on Oct. 22, 2016, Locatelli beat Gigi Buffon.

On this evening on Oct. 22, 2023, precisely seven years later, he beat the man who was once Buffon’s backup and was in any other case fairly spectacular in his first look in over two years.

For Juventus, although, this was clearly a recreation that had Woman Luck on their facet, whether or not it was with the Thiaw pink card or the deflection that Locatelli’s sho took that meant Mirante had completely no probability on it. The primary one performed an enormous position in how Juventus have been in a position to play after halftime — which, contemplating that the primary half noticed Milan have virtually 70% of the possession, Juve seeing extra of the ball was all the time going to be an enchancment on how the primary 40 or so minutes went.

However even with extra of the ball within the second half, it’s not like Juve had created a ton. Locatelli’s purpose, within the 63rd minute, was Juventus’ first shot on course your entire evening. Even with a person benefit, Juve solely put 4 pictures on body the whole lot of the second half — and two of these got here on the double save that Mirante made because the Bianconeri tried to double their lead.

Would a much bigger lead would have been good with the person benefit? In fact, however fortunately Juventus seemed fairly stable as soon as they bought the lead. That’s most likely the most important factor that occurred following Locatelli’s purpose. There have been some nervy moments as a result of any workforce that has any individual like Rafa Leao operating at full pace on the counterattack goes to be harmful at occasions even with 10 males on the sector. However Juve’s protection, a lot to their credit score, have been in a position to bend however not break and permit Milan to get a late equalizer.

It is a huge win it doesn’t matter what you assume Juve’s Scudetto possibilities could find yourself being a month or two from now. They’re now two factors behind Inter in first, all of 1 level behind Milan in second and now have a fairly favorable schedule earlier than the subsequent worldwide break arrives.

Then once more, beating Milan is all the time good it doesn’t matter what the desk appears to be like like. And hey, if this entire “win the massive recreation proper out the worldwide break” goes to be a pattern, I’m all for persevering with it if Juve wish to accomplish that after the subsequent one, too, contemplating know they play. (Trace: additionally they name the San Siro dwelling.)

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

• Pre-game thought No. 1: Please don’t mess up my birthday once more, Juventus.
• Pre-game thought No. 2: Even with all of these gamers absent, Milan’s beginning lineup is fairly stable!
• Pre-game thought No. 3: The identical can’t be stated about Juventus’ beginning lineup. You are taking out the 2 huge guys up entrance after which just a few different regulars and … yeah, it’s slightly tough to say the least.
• Pre-game thought No. 4: AMERICA.
• Pre-game thought No. 5: Seeing the captain’s armband on Adrien Rabiot’s arm will want some getting used to over the subsequent few weeks.
• Holy smokes was Tek Szczesny’s first save of the evening a great one. That’s world class proper there, my pals.
• Little did we all know that Szczesny’s huge save would show to be his solely save your entire evening. That’s now 4 straight clear sheets since his catastrophe of an evening towards Sassuolo. That’s how an expert who is superb at his job goes about it, of us.
• Sure, that’s 100% a pink card on Thiaw and you may’t inform me in any other case. Kean was in 1-on-1 with Antonio Mirante if he wasn’t hauled down by Thiaw proper after he bought by him.
• That was additionally an important ball from Timothy Weah to permit Kean to do what he did on that transfer. He stood in there realizing the sort out was coming proper as he was making contact. Jogged my memory of a quarterback standing in to make the throw realizing full properly he was about to get crushed by a blitzing linebacker.
• Federico Gatti had an absolute handful with Rafael Leao out huge and it didn’t take lengthy to see that one dude is basically quick and the opposite dude will not be as quick.
• Props to Gatti for hanging powerful by means of all of it. It wasn’t excellent by any means, but when the plan was to not completely let Leao crush your soul, I believe that purpose was achieved.
• Additionally, Bremer was implausible towards Milan. Completely implausible.
• I do know the stats will say in any other case, nevertheless it felt like Bremer gained about 50 balls within the air and had 40 tackles. You gained’t have the ability to show me in any other case and I’m going with this it doesn’t matter what.
• Additionally, Daniele Rugani — the much-maligned Daniele Rugani! — was stellar on this one as properly. Whether or not it was out on the left or when he shifted into the center as Bremer went out on the correct to maintain tabs on Leao within the closing minutes, Rugani did every thing he wanted to do. He doesn’t play a lot lately, however he simply appears to reply the decision as a rule.
• Hey! It’s Dean Huijsen!
• No strain, child, however right here’s your debut out of necessity as a result of Gatti’s on a yellow and we’ve bought no one else able to enjoying on the again so that you’re gonna go on and play in entrance of 70,000 folks.
• To his credit score, if Huijsen was nervous on the within (which he virtually definitely needed to be), he didn’t present it in his first-ever senior workforce look for Juventus. That good little physique test on the sideline was a memorable second as properly.
• Timothy Weah placing in a stable shift on the identical stadium wherein his dad used to name dwelling. That looks as if a fairly cool little footnote to this one. And he bought an help, too!
• You point out one American in a Juve jersey, you gotta point out the opposite: Weston McKennie, outdoors of that actually good scoring probability that he skied into the second degree (most likely), seemed fairly good. Juve want him to play like that (and like he has a lot of the season) contemplating what the midfield scenario at the moment is.
• Juventus are undefeated in video games wherein Adrien Rabiot is captain.
• In conclusion, I want Juventus beating Milan (or another workforce for that matter however particularly that workforce) on my birthday in comparison with the choice seven years in the past when Locatelli scored the one purpose at San Siro. It’s significantly better high-fiving my dad and mom on today slightly than fuming on my option to work.
